Benzaiten - Goddess of Love by PagodaComics Benzaiten - Goddess of Love by PagodaComics
Benzaiten is the japanese goddess of speech, music, eloquence and water. She is also said to be love-goddess.
She is often shown with a snake, representing dragon and biwa, representing the music aspect.

She is a character of mine for a story of gods and other mythical creatures all around the world.
She is soucha failure in this story - she is full of good intentions and kindness, doing her best yet everything turns out for the worst: falling for guys that treat her bad, agressive guys falling for her, resulting a bloody war ect. XD;
She is a real super-anti-hero (if you don't know what it is, check out my ID for that XP)

Done in 2010 April, I worked a lot on the colours since I have hard time. Luckily I got some help in the end.
It's work-time now.

Love the use of Ukiyo-e-reminiscent contrasting-color gradient and Art Deco in this. The softness of the colors allows you to be contrasty without being too harsh, so the effect takes on a sort of gleam.

I've always seen the biwa played with a fan-shaped plectrum; for what it's worth, I was too busy admiring her hands to notice at first.

Haha, yes ukiyo-e and art nouveau are big inspiration in this piece, you guessed right. :)
And glad you think the colours look good, I worked a LOT on them. XD;

And yes, it's my fault here, I didn't know enough of biwa back then when I drew it. ^^'

For me at times it's all: "oh it's so much piiiiink~" (that's a colour I always had issues with XD) but Benzaiten in this story is like that and I do like the overall feel of it. =)

Silly thing, you should embrace all colors so you would automatically use what's best for what picture. Like this one. XD

Hah no worries, it's not like I myself knew what my problem was, I also posted it to a forum to ask other artist but noone said anything except that the fingers look wierd and one of the left eye is lower than it should be, but nothing about colours. I started to give up on hope already. XD;

Sucks that you posted to a forum for help on one thing and they didn't give. What forum did you post this in for help? Perhaps none who critiqued knew little to nothing on colors to really help you on that. Or maybe they were trying to get you to work on and fix some basic lineart things before you finish and fix up your coloring.

I guess they're not used to that type of stylization of fingers, if the fingers had solid lines between they'd still be accurate. Or maybe it just looked weird to them for as much detail you put in the lineart on everything else, even things that wouldn't necessarily need all those lines and detail like waves, and then to see the fingers overly simplified to have no line in between, I can see where they're coming from then on saying the fingers look weird. Kind of like those plush doll hands that have no fingers in a way compared to everything else... where did that style of fingers come from anyways? So far, I've only seen anime styles do it, but I'm wondering if it's from somewhere else on where you got it from to do, or did you just do it on your own?

They do have a point on the eyes though. But the left eye isn't the only problem on the eye aspect. The right one too is a bit far apart, although you give the illusion that it's not too far with the shadow, where the eye is placed still makes quite a difference on how the eyes and expression looks. For me personally, whenever you do the eyes like that, the character always has an unfocused spaced out expression to me, like an animal in a way whos eyes are far apart. Very impersonal look to connect with. I decided to test it out to see if it really did make a difference and moved the eyes positions (and changed a little bit of the shadow around the eye, since that was a lot), and to me it did make quite a difference. Gave a more personal real solid expression to me. That's just my two cents on that though. I put up a comparison on it from yours to my edit and you tell me if it makes any difference to you on eye placement. [link]

Yeah. They pointed out some things though but didn't offer much help anyway. They said the eyes, the fingers and the bluish colour. I changed after that so it did get better. I had problem because in thumbnail it looked HORRID with the colours. Yet when I looked it at full-view it looked nice to me. it was confusing.
It was coloured already (and even worse than when you saw actually, I can show you previous version if you wanna see the blinding horror XD).
And in fact the greenish tint in the sky did bug me as well but didn't klnow what to do about it exactly. So your advices were PRICELESS for me! X'33333

The fingers, I was thinking what was the FIRST case I've seen and liked it and two big chategories:
Art Nouveau for once. I see often that the outline of the character is bold yet details are only done with a light shading.
Everything else I've seen from artist doing that - I REALLY liked how some comic arts or just arts generally I saw on the internet had the effect when the fingers are not fully shaped, more like only shown where there are dark shadows, it's a bit like "impressionists" when the main thing is not the poutlines but the play of dark and light shapes and tones (with impressionist paintings it's colours too of course).
So I just generally liked that effect and applied.
*scratches head*
Lately many people say it's disturbing, maybe I overdo it...? for me it seems fine.
I know I do it with shoday often too. but there I surely will use whenever I feel like, it's stylizied enough. XP

OMG SGTHJKAHDTT!!!!!!! :icondragonglomp:
that is SO AWESOME that you did!!!! 8DDDDDDDD
Thank you sooo much!!!:icondragonhug:

Ah I see... (No, I don't think I need to see how bad it was before it got to me to point things out. What do you want to do? Blind me!? XDD )
That's good to know that I can still give good advice. :3

Ah, Art Nouveau has never been a style for me like and get into, so I've never looked to see it myself.
...never been too into impressionist paintings either...
Is it just that Hungarian site that's saying it? It could be just your countries tastes in art... I don't see what could be so "disturbing" about it. But it could be, like I said, that you do so much line detail everywhere else, that it looks odd for people when the look at the hands, and they're just melded together. But who knows.
Shodai should be just fine with it since it is a very simple stylized style.

Just doing my job ma'am.
